Comixology & Marvel's Epic Collections

Ever since I have been using Comixology, it's had a somewhat variable relationship with Trade Paperbacks, my preferred form of reading comics. Sometimes a trade would get a digital release, sometimes it wouldn't. A really good example is the Spider-Man Alien Costume Saga books: Spider-Man: The Complete Alien Costume Saga - Book Two was released 22nd Apr 2015 the day it came out in print to comic shops. Yet volume one was nowhere to be seen!

Marvel's Epic Collections suffered greatly over the first few year since their launch. They've been my main TPB purchases for the last few years, mainly thanks to the first couple of volumes reprinting some material I'd been after for years, and as my hands deteriorate making it harder for me to turn the pages of a physical book I'm increasingly reliant on digital books and comics.

The initial six releases, as detailed in Marvel Announces Epic Collections, For Iron Man, Thor And More and The Next Load Of Marvel Epic Collections are

18th Sep 2013 Iron Man v10 The Enemy Within

23rd Oct 2013 Thor v16 War of the Pantheons

20th Nov 2013 Amazing Spider-Man v20 Cosmic Adventures

11th Dec 2013 Avengers v9 The Final Threat

15th Jan 2014 Fantastic Four v17 All in the Family

19th Feb 2014 Captain America v9 Dawn's Early Light

None of the first six Epic collections appeared on Comixology when they were released. In fact none of the next six did either, by which point the initial six titles are joined by a seventh, Daredevil:
19th Mar 2014 Iron Man v16 War Games

9th Apr 2014 Daredevil v18 Fall From Grace

16th Apr 2014 Thor v11 A Kingdom Lost

21st May 2014 Amazing Spider-Man v15 Ghosts of the Past

18th Jun 2014 Avengers v17 Judgment Day

23rd Jul 2014 Fantastic Four v20 Into the Time Stream

By this time there are 12 Epic Collections missing from Comixology.

Although new comics and trades are released on a Wednesday, both digitally and in print, a few older trades appear digitally every Thursday morning.

On Thursday 31st July 2014 Comixology gained it's first Epic Collection:

31st Jul 2014 Amazing Spider-Man v20 Cosmic Adventures https://www.comixology.co.uk/Amazing-Spider-Man-Epic-Collection-Cosmic-Adventures/digital-comic/126885
Which was 223 days after it's print release in comic shops.

On 20th August 2014 Epic 13 Captain America 12 Society of Serpents was published and appeared on Comixology on that date, the first Epic so to do. So at this point 11 of the first 13 are missing.

20th Aug 2014 Captain America v12 Society of Serpents https://www.comixology.co.uk/Captain-America-Epic-Collection-Society-of-Serpents/digital-comic/131911
The next Epic, the 14th appears on Comixology the date it's published too:
10th Sep 2014 Fantastic Four v1 The World's Greatest Comic Magazine https://www.comixology.co.uk/Fantastic-Four-Epic-Collection-The-Worlds-Greatest-Comic-Magazine/digital-comic/139796
So at the end of the first year 14 Epic Collections have been physically published but just 3 are available digitally and 11 are missing.

The next Epic physically published also fails to appear on Comixology

24/09/2014 15 Amazing Spider-Man v1 Great Power
12 out of 15 missing

The next 3 Epics all appear on Comixology the date they're published

1st Oct 2014 16 Moon Knight v1 Bad Moon Rising https://www.comixology.co.uk/Moon-Knight-Epic-Collection-Bad-Moon-Rising/digital-comic/144261

15th Oct 2014 17 Thor v1 The God of Thunder https://www.comixology.co.uk/Thor-Epic-Collection-The-God-Of-Thunder/digital-comic/149280

29th Oct 2014 18 Iron Man v1 The Golden Avenger https://www.comixology.co.uk/Iron-Man-Epic-Collection-The-Golden-Avenger/digital-comic/155124

And then the next 3 don't:
12th Nov 2014 19 Avengers v1 Earth's Mightiest Heroes

19th Nov 2014 20 Silver Surfer v1 When Calls Galactus

26th Nov 2014 21 Captain America v1 Captain America Lives Again

There are now 15 Epics out of 21 missing

The next Epic does appear on Comixology the date it's published

10th Dec 2014 22 Wolverine v1 Madripoor Nights https://www.comixology.co.uk/Wolverine-Epic-Collection-Madripoor-Nights/digital-comic/169928
The one after is the last skipped on Comixology so far:
24th Dec 2014 23 X-Men v1 Children of the Atom
That made 16 out of 23 missing.

From the next release and the start of 2015 all Epics appear the date they're published

21st Jan 2015 24 Iron Man v13 Stark Wars https://www.comixology.co.uk/Iron-Man-Epic-Collection-Stark-Wars/digital-comic/181671
I can however find evidence of other trades, notably big book compilations of material already collected, have been skipped after this date.

These are the 16 Epics which were missing at the start of 2015:

01 Iron Man v10 The Enemy Within

02 Thor v16 War of the Pantheons

04 Avengers v9 The Final Threat

05 Fantastic Four v17 All in the Family

06 Captain America v9 Dawn's Early Light

07 Iron Man v16 War Games

08 Daredevil v18 Fall From Grace

09 Thor v11 A Kingdom Lost

10 Amazing Spider-Man v15 Ghosts of the Past

11 Avengers v17 Judgment Day

12 Fantastic Four v20 Into the Time Stream

15 Amazing Spider-Man v1 Great Power

19 Avengers v1 Earth's Mightiest Heroes

20 Silver Surfer v1 When Calls Galactus

21 Captain America v1 Captain America Lives Again

23 X-Men v1 Children of the Atom

That's not the end of the story though as every so often an older Epic does get released digitally on a Thursday, like Amazing Spider-Man v20 Cosmic Adventures above, but it took till 2016 for the number to change again though:
28th Apr 2016 Daredevil v18 Fall From Grace https://www.comixology.co.uk/Daredevil-Elektra-Fall-From-Grace/digital-comic/367616
This is 750 days after it's publication and there are now 15 Epics missing.

This volume is slightly odd: it's the only digital Epic Collection without the words Epic Collection in it's title so it won't show up in a search!

The next release was over a year later and was quite a significant one as the first epic released in print finally came out on Comixology:

3rd Aug 2017 Iron Man v10 The Enemy Within https://www.comixology.co.uk/Iron-Man-Epic-Collection-The-Enemy-Within/digital-comic/549130
This appeared 1415 days after it's publication and 14 Epics missing

I had known this was missing and it came as a surprise to me when it popped up in a sale at the end of that year which contained several cheap Epic Collections and really pushed me over into buying them digitally. That along with another very cheap trade sale early in 2018, with new volumes for £0.69/$0.99 really brought the question of "Which Epic Collections Are Missing On Comixology?" to mind, as well as making me really aware of the older trades appearing on Comixology on Thursdays so that is the point I started seriously tracking things and worked out what was missing.

But with one older book in 2014, one in 2016 and one in 2017 things weren't moving fast. 2018 was even worse with nothing, and there were times I questioned why I was looking at Comixology's New Releases every Thursday morning. However there's been four older releases so far in 2019:

18th Apr 2019 Amazing Spider-Man v1 Great Power https://www.comixology.co.uk/Amazing-Spider-Man-Epic-Collection-Great-Power/digital-comic/761109
1667 days after publication, 13 Epics missing

The next two Epics appeared on the same day!

4th Jul 2019 Amazing Spider-Man v15 Ghosts of the Past https://www.comixology.co.uk/Amazing-Spider-Man-Epic-Collection-Ghosts-Of-The-Past/digital-comic/786047
1870 days after publication, 12 Epics missing
4th Jul 2019 Avengers v17 Judgment Day https://www.comixology.co.uk/Avengers-Epic-Collection-Judgment-Day/digital-comic/786042
1842 days after publication, 11 Epics missing

And as a bonus the long awaited, by me at least, Spider-Man: The Complete Alien Costume Saga - Book One also appeared!

There's been one more older Epic released on Comixology since then:

18th Jul 2019 21 Captain America v1 Captain America Lives Again https://www.comixology.co.uk/Captain-America-Epic-Collection-Captain-America-Lives-Again/digital-comic/786097
1695 days after publication, 10 Epics missing

And that's where we are, these are the 10 Epic Collections currently missing from Comixology:

02 Thor v16 War of the Pantheons

04 Avengers v9 The Final Threat

05 Fantastic Four v17 All in the Family

06 Captain America v9 Dawn's Early Light

07 Iron Man v16 War Games

09 Thor v11 A Kingdom Lost

12 Fantastic Four v20 Into the Time Stream

19 Avengers v1 Earth's Mightiest Heroes

20 Silver Surfer v1 When Calls Galactus

23 X-Men v1 Children of the Atom

The last two of these are currently scheduled for a physical reprint in December. Will that be the point their digital versions are released?

Tape Spool Computers

Are we sitting comfortably? Good

I first noticed this computer in The Invasion, in Internetional Electromatics reception when Zoe blew it up.

A little while later I spotted it in Ambassadors of Death too..... and then saw it a few more times. And then saw more than one together. There's at least FOUR, all different. Yes, I'll concede they could have been modified but there's four variants here appearing in a very short space of time together, two of which definitely reappear latter

Doctor Who
Tenth Planet
8-29 October 1966

This seems to be the only appearance of this one: tape spools in all 4 sections at the top, rounded windows over the tape spools.

Adam Adamant
D for Destruction
13 October 1966

The machine on the left is very similar to above, the only difference is it has squared windows.

The machine on the right has dials in it's upper windows.

Out Of The Unknown
Lambda 1
20 October 1966

This one has flashing lights in upper windows.

The Prisoner
Arrival
19 September 1967

Looks like the Out of the Unknown Lambda 1 one again.

Prisoner close up

The Avengers
Mission: Highly Improbable
18 November 1967*

The right one from Adam Adamant D for Destruction with the Dials

Doctor Who
The Invasion
2 November - 21 December 1968

This looks like the unit from Out of the Unknown Lambda 1/The Prisoner Arrival again, but the doors are now missing over the tape spools. Later evidence suggests this is a different unit!

vlcsnap-2017-10-24-09h04m49s-2017-10-24-09h04m49s725

Doctor Who
Ambassadors of Death
28 March - 2 May 1970

It's definitely the same one as The Invasion, lights in the top windows, no windows lower down showing white tape spools.

1

Now for some while I'd left it at that but Mister Rhys on Twitter prompted me to look further and it's a good job I did because come episode 2 it's been replaced behind the door by the similar unit with lights in the top half but with doors over black tape spools/mounts in the lower half, identical to the one in Out of the Unknown Lambda 1/The Prisoner Arrival.

To it's right is a unit with dials in the top half and red tape spools/mounts covered by doors in the bottom half. Charitably this could be the same one on the right in Adam Adamant D for Destruction/The Avengers Mission: Highly Improbable if they've changed the tape spools.

And to it's right there's the unit we saw in episode 1/The Invasion

But come episode 3 it changes again The same lights/door covered tape spools unit is still behind the door from Out of the Unknown Lambda 1/The Prisoner Arrival.

And the dials/red tape spools with doors is still to the right of that

But next to that there's a unit with dials in the top half and uncovered white tape spools in the bottom half now. Again charitably this could be the same one on the right in Adam Adamant D for Destruction/The Avengers Mission: Highly Improbable if they've changed the tape spools, but there's definitely two with dials now.

Episode 3 shows several of the doors and panels open after Taltalian's device goes off The far right unit

The middle unit

There's some more pictures of this room in the DVD photo gallery. Judging by the one behind the door, this was taken for episode 1:

However there's another photo, presumably taken at the same time, which shows all three of the other units down the far end of the room, which I don't think you see in the episode: dials & covered red spools in the middle, lights & covered black spools on the right and dials & open white spools against the far wall.

So to summarise:

1) White Tape spools top and bottom, doors over spools, rounded corners on the windows: Doctor Who The Tenth Planet.

2) Black Tape spools top and bottom, doors over spools, square corners on the windows: Adam Adamant: D for Destruction

3) Dials top, Black Tape spools bottom, doors over spools, square corners on the windows: Adam Adamant: D for Destruction, possibly Doctor Who Ambassadors of Death 2/3

4) Lights top, Black Tape spools bottom, doors over spools, square corners on the windows: Out Of The Unknown Lambda 1 , The Prisoner Arrival, Doctor Who Ambassadors of Death 2/3

5) Lights top, White Tape spools bottom, NO doors over spools, square corners on the windows: Doctor Who The Invasion, Doctor Who Ambassadors of Death 1 & 2

6) Dials top, Red Tape spools bottom, doors over spools, square corners on the windows: Doctor Who Ambassadors of Death 2/3

7) Dials top, Black Tape spools bottom, NO doors over spools, square corners on the windows: Doctor Who Ambassadors of Death 2/3

So a minimum of four units, which we see in various combinations in Ambassadors of Death. That's the minimum there can be with assumptions about parts being swapped round made.

Power Station Panels II

This is part two of a series on the Power Room panels seen in 1960s Doctor Who and other TV shows and films. Part One covers their appearances up to 1967's The Underwater Menace, which is where I first spotted them, can be found at http://philsotherthings.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/power-station-panels.html.

We start this time with the Pump room set seen in The Macra Terror episode 3, broadcast 25th March 1967.

Macra3a

Macra3b Macra3d

Their last known appearance in season four is in the first three episodes of The Faceless Ones, , broadcast 8th-22nd April 1967.

vlcsnap-00047 Faceless3

The panels don't feature in the last story of season four, Evil of the Daleks, which means they've appeared in 4 season 4 stories.

They're also not in the first story of Season 5, Tomb of the Cybermen, but they make regular appearances for the rest of that season.

The Abominable Snowmen episode 1, shown on 30th September 1967, is notable for being their first appearance inside the Tardis:

AS 1_2

In The Enemy of the World 4, broadcast 13th January 1968, they can be seen inside Salamander's underground base:

vlcsnap-00001 vlcsnap-00007

No telesnaps for this episode existed so this appearance was hidden till the episode was returned in 2013.

vlcsnap-00002 vlcsnap-00004

The same panel that is seen in Salamander's underground office makes a blink and you'll miss it appearance in The Web of Fear episode 1, shown on 3rd February 1968,

40Enemy 41web2

The Fury from the Deep, broadcast from 16th March to 20th April 1968, makes extensive use of the panels in the main control room set:

vlcsnap-00015

Thanks to some colour film shot at Ealing Studios we can see this set, and the panels within again, in colour.

vlcsnap-00011 vlcsnap-00010

The panels are used elsewhere in the refinery complex.

1a 4

More are featured in the gas rig control room set and for the first time these include black panels. Are these the originals painted or different ones?

5 6a

A couple of panels make a fleeting appearance in the Tardis at the end of Wheel in Space episode 6, the last episode of this season, shown on 1st June 1968:

vlcsnap-00011

During Doctor Who's fifth season they appear in 4 out of the 6 stories.

In season six another panel is visible in the Tardis during The Mind Robber episode 1, broadcast 14 September 1968.

vlcsnap-00006 vlcsnap-00004

Their next appearance isn't in Doctor Who but the Out of the Unknown, episode This Body Is Mine shown on 21st January 1969. Many Out of the Unknown episodes in Series 2 & 3 don't survive so there may well be other appearances which we can't see. Fortunately this one does and you can watch this episode, directed by long time Doctor Who director Douglas Camfield on the Out of the Unknown DVD Set!

vlcsnap-00001 vlcsnap-00002

They return in the Doctor Who story The Seeds of Death and are most prominent in episodes 4 & 5 which were broadcast on the 15th & 22nd February 1969.

vlcsnap-00002 vlcsnap-00005

Noticeably the panels, which are mounted on wheeled units, swap places between the episodes!

After that appearance in Patrick Troughton's third and last season they seemingly disappear until the second season of Jon Pertwee's Doctor when they appear in the colonist's dome in Colony in Space broadcast from 10th April - 15th May 1971.

colony colony2

This is their last known Doctor Who appearance but the last time they're seen The next time they're seen is in this publicity photo showing the Lab set from the third season of Doomwatch, which began broadcast in June 1972.

Doomwatch

I have The Doomwatch DVD but haven't managed to spot any in the three existing third season episodes. EDIT: 7th March 2017: Their final appearance is a shot outside the Doctor's lab in The Green Death episode 1:

GD Panel

That, so far, is it. If you know of any other appearances of these panels then I'd love to hear from you, especially if you can provide screen captures. Comment bellow or Tweet me @philip_ayres.

My thanks to the good people of Roobarbs Forum for finding many of these appearances and drawing my attention to them!
